ABSTRACT

Aim To explore the impact of coronavirus-2019 disease (COVID-19) pandemic on emergency reper-fusion characteristics in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) from non-epicenter. Methods This was a retrospective study involved STEMI patients undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI), who admitted to chest pain center in our hospital during the pandemic ( from January 23 to March 29 in 2020) and the same period in 2019, excluding the patients with COVID-19. Clinical characteristics and reperfusion parameters were compared between the two groups. Results A total of 64 STEMI patients undergoing PPCI were enrolled in our study, including 13 patients during the pandemic and 51 patients during the same period in 2019. No differences occurred in admission signs, GRACE scores, arrival periods, transferred patterns,the period from door to troponin,and the period from first medical contact to dual antiplatelet between the two groups ( P>0. 05). As compared with 2019, STEMI patients undergoing PPCI had an apparent reduction. Meanwhile, significant delays appeared in reperfusion parameters, in-cluding the period from symptom onset to first medical contact (10 h vs. 3. 0 h, P<0. 001), the period from first medical contact to electrocardiogram (6 min vs. 3 min, P<0. 001), the period from door to troponin (15 min vs. 12 min, P = 0. 048), the period from door to device (76 min vs. 62 min, P = 0. 017), the period from telephone to catheter activated (15 min vs. 5 min, P<0. 001) and the period from catheter arrival to device (52 min vs. 41 min, P = 0. 033). ABSTRACT

Objective To understand the knowledge of COVID-19 and plague prevention and control in Qinghai Province, so as to carry out targeted health education and improve people's ability to prevent and control COVID–19, plague and other publichealth emergencies. Methods Six counties were randomly selected from three cities (states) by two-stage sampling. A self- designed questionnaire was randomly distributed to the public to investigate the awareness and behavior of COVID-19 and plague prevention and control. The Chinese version of Epidate was used for database construction and data entry. After checking and verifying, the data was exported as an Excel file and analyzed by SPSS 21.0 software. Results Accordign to the recovered questionnaires, the passing rate of knowledge of COVID-19 prevention and control was 78.46%, and the average score was (75. 82±16.43). The passing rate of plague prevention and control knowledge was 91.89%, and the average score was (86.46±15.94). The survey area, occupation category, gender and education level affected the knowledge of COVID-19 prevention and control. The average score was statistically significant (P<0.05). The survey area, occupation category, age and education level affected the knowledge of plague prevention and control, and the average score was statistically significant (P<0. 05). Conclusion People in Qinghai have poor knowledge of COVID - 19 prevention and control, but have good knowledge of plague prevention and control. ABSTRACT

AIM: To explore the characteristics of astigmatism in preschool children before, during and after the COVID-19 epidemic, so as to provide a reference for further prevention and control of children's vision. *METHODS: In the consecutive four years from January 2018 to December 2021, a retrospective analysis of vision data was conducted on 2 273 preschool children (4546 eyes) younger than 4 years old who participated in children' s vision screening test in Baiyun district, Guangzhou. They were divided into 1 - year old group (ages<1-year old, 420 cases), 2-year old group (1-year <= ages < 2- year, 543 cases), 3- year old group (2- year <=ages <3-year, 614 cases), and 4 - year old group (3 - year <= ages< 4- year, 696 cases) according to ages. The analysis included astigmatic degrees of children's eyes as well as their conditions of astigmatism. *RESULTS: In 2018, the astigmatic degrees of the both eyes of 1-year-old group were higher than those of other groups (P<0.05). The binocular astigmatic degrees of the preschool children in four groups were obviously higher in 2020 than 2019 (P < 0. 05), while they were significantly decreased in 2021 when compared with 2020 (P < 0. 05). From 2019 to 2020, the increase of astigmatic degrees of the right eye is more considerable than the left eye of preschool children in those four groups (P < 0. 001). Furthermore, the morbidity of astigmatism basically echoes with the changing tendency of astigmatic degrees from 2018 to 2021. *CONCLUSIONS: Preschool children in Baiyun district, Guangzhou, have the highest degree of astigmatism and the fastest progression rate within 1 year old. Before COVID - 19 epidemic, the changes in astigmatism and prevalence were relatively stable;during COVID - 19 epidemic, the astigmatism and prevalence increased significantly and the astigmatic degrees of right eye increased more than that of the left eye;after the normalization of epidemic prevention and control, the astigmatism and prevalence decreased significantly.Copyright © 2023 International Journal of Ophthalmology (c/o Editorial Office). ABSTRACT

Introduction: Advanced MZL is generally incurable, with periods of remission and relapse. Zanubrutinib (BGB-3111), a potent and highly specific next-generation Bruton tyrosine kinase (BTK) inhibitor, was approved in the US and Canada for R/R MZL based on the MAGNOLIA primary analysis (BGB- 3111-214;NCT03846427);here, the final MAGNOLIA analysis is presented. Method(s): This was a phase 2, multicenter, single-arm study of adult patients (pts) with R/R MZL (>=1 prior CD20-directed therapy). Zanubrutinib (160 mg twice daily) was given until disease progression or unacceptable toxicity. The primary endpoint was overall response rate (ORR) by independent review committee (IRC) per Lugano classification. Secondary endpoints were investigator-assessed ORR, duration of response (DOR), progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), and safety. Efficacy was assessed by positron emission tomography (PET)-based Lugano criteria for IRC-confirmed fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-avid disease at baseline;non-avid disease was assessed by computed tomography (CT)-based criteria. Result(s): As of May 4, 2022, 68 pts were treated (median age=70 y [range 37-95];>=75 y=27.9%). MZL subtypes included extranodal (38.2%), nodal (38.2%), splenic (17.6%), and unknown (5.9%). The median number of prior therapies was 2 (range 1-6);32.4% of pts had disease refractory to last therapy, most (89.7%) had prior chemoimmunotherapy, and 7 (10.3%) had rituximab monotherapy as their only prior treatment. Sixty-one pts (89.7%) had FDG-avid disease. After a median follow-up of 28.0 mos (range 1.6-32.9) and a median treatment duration of 24.2 mos (range 0.9-32.9), 66 pts were efficacy- evaluable. IRC-assessed ORR (complete response [CR]+partial response [PR]) was 68.2% (CR=25.8%). By subtype, (Figure Presented)(Figure Presented)ORR/CR rates were 64.0%/40.0% (extranodal), 76.0%/20.0% (nodal), 66.7%/8.3% (splenic), and 50.0%/25.0% (unknown). Median DOR, PFS, and OS were not reached. Over 70.0% of pts were alive or progression-free after 2 years (Figure). Sensitivity analysis using only CT-based criteria (n=66) showed an ORR of 66.7% and CR of 24.2%. The most common treatment-emergent AEs were bruising (23.5%), diarrhea (22.1%), and constipation (17.6%). Neutropenia (8.8%) and COVID-19 pneumonia (5.9%) were the most common Grade >=3 AEs. Five pts (7.4%) died due to unrelated AEs: COVID-19 pneumonia=2, acute myeloid leukemia=1, myocardial infarction=1, septic encephalopathy=1. Hypertension occurred in 3 pts (4.4%), atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter in 1 pt (1.5%) each;none led to treatment withdrawal. One pt (1.5%) had a Grade 3 gastrointestinal hemorrhage while receiving rivaroxaban. None of the pts required dose reduction. ABSTRACT

[Background] Since the outbreak of COVID-19, primary health care workers have been facing un-precedented work pressure, and their occupational stress should be taken seriously. [Objective] To analyze the occupational stress situation and its influencing factors of primary health care workers in Guangdong Province, and to propose targeted interventions. [Methods] Using a multi-stage stratified random sampling method, each prefecture-level city in Guangdong Province was classified into "good", "medium", or "poor" category based on its gross domestic product (GDP) in 2019 released by the Guangdong Provincial Bureau of Statistics. In September 2021, four primary health care institutions were randomly selected from each stra-tum, and a total of 1 327 staff members were selected for the study. The Core Occupational Stress Scale (COSS) and a basic information questionnaire designed by the authors were used. Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare the means between two groups, and Kruskal-Walis H test was used to compare the means among multiple groups. The comparison of categorical data was performed by trend chi2 test or Pearson chi2 test;the analysis of factors influencing occupational stress was performed by dichotomous multiple logistic regression analysis. [Results] There were 365 health care workers reporting occupational stress in this survey, and the positive rate of occupational stress was 27.5%. The total occupational stress score in M (P25, P75) and the scores of social support, organization and reward, demand and effort, and control were 45.0 (40.0, 50.0), 20.0 (17.0, 21.0), 14.0 (12.0, 17.0), 12.0 (10.0, 15.0), and 5.0 (4.0, 6.0), re-spectively. The results of dichotomous multiple logistic regression analysis showed that high education, low income, doctor positions, long working hours in a day, and shift work were associated with the occurrence of reporting occupational stress (P < 0.05). [Conclusion] Education, average monthly income, job category, daily working hours, and shifts are factors influencing the occurrence of reporting occupational stress in primary health care workers;targeted interventions should be implemented to reduce their occupational stress levels.Copyright © 2023, Shanghai Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention. ABSTRACT

Purpose/Relevance: Pediatric cases of COVID-19 have increased in the setting of the highly transmissible delta variant which has impacted the care of children by ophthalmologists. Inflammatory ocular manifestations of acute COVID-19 infections have been observed and are important to recognize and expeditiously manage. Further, ocular involvement has been recognized in MIS-C. Finally, new challenges in treating and monitoring patients with non-infectious uveitis (NIU) evolved. Guidance is needed regarding immunosuppression, reducing clinic visits/in-hospital exposures while maintaining disease control, and vaccination. Target Audience: Pediatric ophthalmologists, fellows, residents. Current Practice: Ocular inflammatory manifestations are reported in children during or after symptomatic or asymptomatic COVID-19 infection and may go unrecognized. Guidelines for managing children with NIU on immunosuppressive treatment (IMT) continues to evolve, and updated information is needed. Best Practice: Knowledge of ocular manifestations of acute and post-infectious COVID-19 including Multisystemic Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) will improve clinical care of children. Patients may present with conjunctivitis, optic neuritis, transient myasthenia-like syndrome, acute anterior uveitis, keratitis, pan-uveitis and papilledema. Ophthalmic management often involves systemic work-up and coordination of care amongst a multidisciplinary team. Consensus guidelines for monitoring uveitis and preventing COVID-19 infection in children with NIU on IMT may be applied to clinical practice. Expected Outcomes: Clinicians will develop an understanding of (1) Ophthalmic manifestations of acute and post-infectious COVID-19 infection and MIS-C (2) Challenges and strategies to manage NIU during a pandemic (3) Updates on infection risk and vaccination strategies for children on IMT. Format: Didactic, case presentations, rheumatology, ophthalmology panel discussion with audience participation. Summary: COVID-19-related ocular manifestations such as conjunctivitis, uveitis, pan-uveitis and optic neuritis are rare but are important to recognize. Children with NIU on IMT represent a unique patient population balancing ophthalmic follow-up and control of ocular/systemic disease and preventing infection.Copyright © 2022

ABSTRACT

Introduction: COVID-19 pandemic has been associated with increased rates of de-pression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation. Individuals with mental illnesses are disproportionately affected by additional complex health issues. This study aims to examine the knowledge and impact of COVID-19 among patients with mental disorders at the Harris County Psychiatric Center (HCPC). Method(s): A retrospective review of surveys was conducted for patients with mental illness at HCPC. Participants were surveyed on demographics, COVID-19 knowledge, and COVID-19 healthcare impact. The data were analyzed with SPSS 20 for Windows at a 0.05 significance level. Result(s): A total of 46 patients were included in the study. We found that the patient population with mental disorders has different methods of obtaining information regarding COVID-19 and practices varying safety measures. To be precise, more women (52.2%) than men (21.7%) learned about COVID-19 through family and friends (p=0.032). More Hispanic (21.4%) compared to non-Hispanic (0%) patients learned about COVID-19 through resources from the World Health Organization (WHO) (p=0.032). Fewer African American (AA) patients avoided contact with people who were sick (39% vs. 81%) Caucasian (p=0.01) and (100%) Asian/Native American/Pacific Islander [ANAPI] patients (p=0.04). We found more non-Hispanic (50.0%) vs. Hispanic (7.1%) patients reported that their personal time (time outside of work) was unchanged by COVID-19 (p=0.007). More Hispanic (57.1%) vs. non-Hispanic (17.9%) patients reported increased time with family members (p=0.009). Compared to Hispanic patients, more non-Hispanic patients reported unchanged difficulty scheduling appoint-ments (46.4% vs. 7.1%) (p=0.015), obtaining prescription (71.4% vs. 35.7%) (p=0.045), and finding housing placement (53.6% vs. 21.4%) (p=0.047). Furthermore, more Caucasian compared to AA patients reported more changes in how they feel (35.7% vs. 76.2%) (p=0.033), anxiety (52.6% vs. 0%) (p=0.002), stress (47.4% vs. 7.7%) (p=0.024), and sadness (30% vs. 0%) (p=0.031). Finally, more ANAPI (67%) compared to AA patients (0%) reported increased anxiety (p=0.025). Conclusion(s): Our findings suggest that African American patients report less knowledge of COVID-19 prevention and less impact on their mental health by the pandemic compared to other racial groups. Our findings suggest that African American patients may have limited knowledge of COVID-19 prevention compared to other races, Caucasian and Asian/Native American/Pacific Islander patients may have increased mood changes, and Hispanic patients may be experiencing more healthcare inequality amidst the pandemic. ABSTRACT

As a new machine learning method, deep learning has been widely used in computer vision. YOLOv5, a target detection algorithm based on deep learning, has a good detection effect. In the case of COVID-19, masks should be worn correctly in public places. Therefore, it is urgent to design an accurate and effective face mask detection algorithm. To solve the problem of mask-wearing detection, a face mask detection algorithm based on YOLOv5 is proposed. The main research contents include training of the YOLOv5 model, verification of face mask detection function, and analysis and comparison of detection effects of three different sizes of detection models: YOLOv5s, YOLOv5m and YOLOv5l. The proposed model realizes the mask detection function and obtains the advantages and disadvantages of different scale models through performance evaluation. The maximum mAP of the model reached 88.1%, with good detection accuracy. © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

This paper proposes the dynamic inoperability input–output model (DIIM) to analyze the economic impact of COVID-19 in Shanghai in the first quarter of 2022. Based on the input–output model, the DIIM model introduces the sector elasticity coefficient, assesses the economic loss of the system and the influence of disturbances on other sectors through sectoral dependence, and simulates the inoperability and economic loss changes through time series. A multi-evaluation examination of the results reveals that the degree of inoperability of sub-sectors is inconsistent with the ranking of economic losses and that it is hard to quantify the impact of each sector directly. Different from the traditional DIIM model that only considers the negative part of the disaster, the innovation of this paper is that the negative value of the inoperability degree is used to measure the indirect positive growth of sectors under the impact of the Shanghai pandemic shock. At the same time, policymakers need to consider multi-objective optimization when making risk management decisions. This study uses surrogate worth trade-off to construct a multi-objective risk management framework to expand the DIIM model to enable policymakers to quantify the trade-off between economic benefit and investment costs when making risk management decisions. © 2023 by the authors.

The number of people who cannot visit hospitals and see medical treatment is increasing due to the COVID-19 epidemic around the world. As a result, there is an increasing risk of serious danger to people's health because they are not helped by medical staff at the necessary time. Therefore, this paper attempts to analyze the service model related to non-face-to-face telehealth as an alternative to patients or sick people not being able to visit the hospital. We would like to identify what services occur on the non-face-to-face telehealth platform between medical staff and patients and derive security-related matters that must be considered in the non-face-to-face telehealth environment. By analyzing the derived security factors, we would like to examine how to smoothly provide security in the successful activation of non-face-to-face telehealth services. © 2023 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Sepsis refers to systemic inflammatory reactions caused by infections, which was the common complication after severe infections, trauma, burns, shock, and major surgery. Septic shock and multiple organ dysfunction syndromes associated with sepsis and its progression were common in intensive care units (ICU). Acute kidney injury (AKI) was a common complication of sepsis. The clinical mortality rate for sepsis was about 20%-50%, and may be as high as 70% if sepsis was associated with acute kidney injury (S-AKI). Therefore, there was a need to initiate the diagnosis and risk stratification of AKI in patients with sepsis, which will contribute to effective intervention and good prognosis. Currently, although the treatment of S-AKI was becoming better understood, diagnostic criteria for AKI were still based on elevated serum creatinine levels or decreased urine volume with the low sensitivity and specificity. Therefore, the use of current diagnostic criteria was not sufficient. The ratio of neutrophils to lymphocytes and platelets (N/LP) was a low-cost measure that could be obtained through routine blood tests and is often used to reflect the inflammatory state of the body. Its usefulness as a predictor of COVID-19 prognosis and the incidence of AKI after abdominal and cardiovascular surgery has been demonstrated. The aim of this study was to determine whether elevated N/LP is associated with the risk and severity of S-AKI within 7 days after admission to the ICU of adult sepsis patients in the Department of Intensive Care Medicine, the First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University. Method(s): Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS22.0. Data with a normal distribution were expressed as mean +/- standard deviation, and data without a normal distribution was expressed as median and interquartile distance (IQR). When variables has normal distributions and homogenous variances, the independent sample T-test and one-way ANOVA were used to compare the means, and then the minimum significant difference (LSD) test was performed. The rank sum test was used to compare variables with non-normal distribution. P value below 0.05(*) was considered statistically significant. Result(s): A total of 45 patients with sepsis from 2021/01/1-2021/12/31 were enrolled in the first ward of Intensive Care Department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University, among which 20 patients with sepsis developed AKI within 7 days after admission to ICU. The N/LP values of sepsis patients and S-AKI patients did not conform to the normal distribution, but satisfied the normal distribution after logarithmic conversion. Independent sample T test showed that there was a significant difference between the two groups. Further comparison was made between patients with sepsis and patients with S-AKI at each stage. The data were in line with normal distribution after logarithmic conversion, and statistical difference was found after one-way ANOVA. There were significant increases in S-AKI3 stage compared with sepsis patients, S-AKI3 stage compared with S-AKI2 stage and S-AKI3 stage compared with S-AKI1 stage. Conclusion(s): Elevated N/LP levels may be associated with the development of S-AKI and severe AKI in patients with sepsis within 7 days after admission to ICU. ABSTRACT

This study investigates the effect of social distancing on the local bias of institutional investors. Using SafeGraph's Social Distancing Metrics data and SEC's EDGAR 13F filings, we find that stay-at-home duration ratio decreases institutional investors' local holdings and firms' institutional ownership in the U.S. We also exploit the lockdown orders across various states during the COVID-19 pandemic as exogenous shocks to conduct the stacked regression estimation, which yields a similar result. Our channel analysis using abnormal return indicates that social distancing mitigates local bias by constraining the information advantage of local investors rather than alleviating their cognitive bias. © 2022 Elsevier Inc.

ABSTRACT

Rationale: To reduce transmission of SARS-CoV-2, non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs), including school closures, hand hygiene, mask mandates, and social distancing, were enforced in Arkansas from 3/2020-2/2021. We hypothesized that the presence of NPIs would correlate with a decrease in asthma exacerbations and viral infections. Methods: Demographic information was collected on subjects with asthma exacerbations or viral infections from 3/2018-5/2022, including age, race, ethnicity, and sex. To evaluate the effects of NPIs, three periods were considered: pre- (03/2018-02/2020), during (03/2020-02/2021), and post- (03/2021-05/2022) NPIs. ANOVA analysis and generalized linear models were performed to determine statistical significance. The stringency of NPIs was evaluated using publicly available data (Oxford Covid-19 Government Response Tracker), which allows for direct comparison of Arkansas NPI status to exacerbation data during the same time periods. Results: 5055 asthma exacerbations (3322 unique subjects) occurred between 3/2018-5/2022. Asthma exacerbations decreased from 3/2020-3/2021 and returned to pre-pandemic numbers by summer 2021 (p<0.0001). Similar downward trends occurred for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) with out-of-season return in summer 2021 (p<0.0001). Rhinovirus was present throughout NPIs. The mean age of exacerbations decreased by 0.9 years when comparing the during NPIs and after NPIs periods (p = 0.0002). An increase in the proportion of exacerbations was noted for non-black and other/unknown ethnicity subjects during and after NPIs. Conclusions: Fewer asthma exacerbations occurred during the most significant NPI employment period (03/2020-02/2021), and an increase in exacerbations was seen as mitigation strategies were relaxed, which correlated with timing of increasing RSV infections.

ABSTRACT

Background:Many issues, such as severity assessment and antibody responses, remain to be answered eagerly for evaluation and understanding of COVID-19. Immune lesion is one of key pathogenesis of the disease. It would be helpful to understand the disease if an investigation on antigenemia and association was conducted in the patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection.Methods:A total of 156 patients admitted to the First People's Hospital of Hefei or Anhui Provincial Hospital on January to February 2020 were involved in this study. SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid (NP) antigen, specific IgM/IgG antibodies, and RNA were detected in sequential sera from three COVID-19 patients, and additional 153 COVID-19 patients by means of NP-antigen capture enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, colloidal gold quick diagnosis, and real-time RT-PCR, respectively. The clinical types of COVID-19 patients were classified into asymptomatic, mild, moderate, severe, and critical, following on the Chinese guideline of COVID-19 diagnosis and treatment. The demographic and clinical data of patients were obtained for comparable analysis.Results:NP antigen was detected in 5 of 20 sequential sera collected from three COVID-19 patients with typically clinical symptoms, and 60.13% (92/153) expanded samples collected within 17 days after illness onset. No SARS-CoV-2 RNA segment was detected in these sera. The NP positive proportion reached a peak (84.85%, 28/33) on 6 to 8 days after illness onset. Both NP concentration and positive proportion were increased with the increase of clinical severity of COVID-19. Compared to NP negative patients, NP positive patients had older age [years, medians (interquartile ranges (IQR)), 49 (6) vs. 31 (11)], lower positive proportion of NP specific IgM [27.17% (25/92) vs. 59.02% (36/61)], and IgG [21.74% (20/92) vs. 59.02% (36/61)] antibodies, and longer duration [days, medians (IQR), 24 (10) vs. 21 (13)] from illness to recovery.Conclusions:SARS-CoV-2 NP antigenemia occurred in COVID-19, and presented highly prevalent at early stage of the disease. The antigenemia was related to clinical severity of the disease, and may be responsible for the delay of detectable SARS-Cov-2 IgM. © 2022 Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery Inc.. ABSTRACT

Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, interest in non-face-to-face telehealth is increasing worldwide, and telehealth services are being activated in various fields. In some countries, successful cases of remote surgery using non-face-to-face telehealth services are emerging one after another. Due to the absence of related standards presented to precisely handle security requirements in a non-face-to-face telehealth environment, security threats in telehealth are proceeding in a form that relies entirely on IT technology. However, the IT technology used in the medical environment is somewhat different from the existing ICT technology, so the need for a cybersecurity framework for non-face-to-face telehealth is becoming a much more important issue. This paper focuses on what needs to be considered to establish an appropriate security model in non-face-to-face telehealth. © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

Rationale: A common MUC5B gene polymorphism, rs35705950-T, is associated with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), but its role in severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection and disease severity is unclear. Objectives: To assess whether rs35705950-T confers differential risk for clinical outcomes associated with coronavirus disease (COVID-19) infection among participants in the Million Veteran Program (MVP). Methods: The MUC5B rs35705950-T allele was directly genotyped among MVP participants; clinical events and comorbidities were extracted from the electronic health records. Associations between the incidence or severity of COVID-19 and rs35705950-T were analyzed within each ancestry group in the MVP followed by transancestry meta-analysis. Replication and joint meta-analysis were conducted using summary statistics from the COVID-19 Host Genetics Initiative (HGI). Sensitivity analyses with adjustment for additional covariates (body mass index, Charlson comorbidity index, smoking, asbestosis, rheumatoid arthritis with interstitial lung disease, and IPF) and associations with post-COVID-19 pneumonia were performed in MVP subjects. Measurements and Main Results: The rs35705950-T allele was associated with fewer COVID-19 hospitalizations in transancestry meta-analyses within the MVP (Ncases = 4,325; Ncontrols = 507,640; OR = 0.89 [0.82-0.97]; P = 6.86 × 10-3) and joint meta-analyses with the HGI (Ncases = 13,320; Ncontrols = 1,508,841; OR, 0.90 [0.86-0.95]; P = 8.99 × 10-5). The rs35705950-T allele was not associated with reduced COVID-19 positivity in transancestry meta-analysis within the MVP (Ncases = 19,168/Ncontrols = 492,854; OR, 0.98 [0.95-1.01]; P = 0.06) but was nominally significant (P < 0.05) in the joint meta-analysis with the HGI (Ncases = 44,820; Ncontrols = 1,775,827; OR, 0.97 [0.95-1.00]; P = 0.03). Associations were not observed with severe outcomes or mortality. Among individuals of European ancestry in the MVP, rs35705950-T was associated with fewer post-COVID-19 pneumonia events (OR, 0.82 [0.72-0.93]; P = 0.001). Conclusions: The MUC5B variant rs35705950-T may confer protection in COVID-19 hospitalizations.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Hepatitis B virus core protein HBc was used as vector to construct virus-like particles expressing novel coronavirus spike protein receptor binding domain RBD, and their immunogenicity was identified, which provides a new idea for the development of COVID-19 vaccines. Methods: The amino acid coding sequence 78 and 81 of hepatitis B virus core protein HBc (1-183 aa) were inserted into novel coronavirus spike protein receptor binding domain RBD and ligated by flexible linker (G4S) 3. After sequence optimization, the fusion gene was cloned into prokaryotic expression vector pET-28a (+) and transformed into expression strain Rosetta. After induced expression in self-inducing medium, the virus-like particles (VLPs) were purified by sucrose density gradient centrifugation. VLPs were detected and identified by SDS-PAGE, Western blot and transmission electron microscope. BALB/c mice were immunized subcutaneously with the prepared VLPs in equal proportion with adjuvant. The specific antibodies in the serum of the mice were analyzed by ELISA to verify the immune effect of HBc-RBD VLPs. Results: Escherichia coli can express partially soluble VLPs in self-inducing medium. VLPs could be observed by transmission electron microscope after purification by sucrose density gradient centrifugation. Mice immunized with HBc-RBD VLPs produced specific antibodies against RBD antigen. Conclusion: VLPs displaying RBD antigen were successfully expressed in prokaryotic expression systems, and their immunogenicity was preliminarily verified by mouse experiment, which provides a new direction for the research and development of novel coronavirus vaccines. © 2022, China Biotechnology Press. ABSTRACT

Due to increased global environment volatility and uncertainty, organizations are constantly faced with unexpected events such as the COVID-19 pandemic, which has brought large international disruptions for several firms. Organizational resilience is a potential notion for describing how firms might stay alive and thrive in such a volatile environment. Therefore, this study aimed to examine how SMEs can foster their resilience through investigating the roles of environmental scanning and process innovation while testing the moderating role of environmental uncertainty. To achieve this aim, we tested a structural model through an empirical investigation with partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) using a sample of 249 Egyptian SMEs. The results reveal that process innovation is a necessary condition for environmental scanning to affect organizational resilience. Furthermore, the results do not support the moderating role of environmental uncertainty the indirect relationship between environmental scanning and organizational resilience. Our findings contribute to innovation and resilience literature by proving that process innovation is a necessary mechanism to translate environmental scanning information to enhance resilience. This research is the first to highlight the role of process innovation in linking environmental scanning to organizational resilience. Our results provide insights about how Egyptian SMEs could remain resilient amidst the COVID-19 through scanning their environments to improve internal processes. We discuss related theoretical and managerial implications.
